Explosion halts production at Gerdau’s Ontario mill

Operations were halted Wednesday at Gerdau's Long Steel North America mill in Whitby, Ontario after an early-morning gas explosion in the furnace department.

The facility was partially evacuated Wednesday and two employees were taken to a hospital. The Ministry of Labour in Ontario is investigating the incident at the rebar, beam, angle and billets mill.
