German Saf-Holland inaugurates new $33 million plant in Mexico

German company Saf-Holland, a global manufacturer of steel components for trailer chassis for heavy trucks, opened a new $33 million production facility in the northern border city of Piedras Negras, in the Mexican state of Coahuila.

The new factory specializes in the production of so-called “fifth wheels” for heavy trucks which are mainly for export. For example, of more than 22,000 heavy trucks manufactured last June, 70 out of every 100 were exported.

According to the state government, the new plant generated 300 new jobs in Piedras Negras, a city that borders Eagle Pass, Texas.

Data from the business chamber Industria Nacional de Autopartes (INA), Coahuila is the largest economy producing auto parts in Mexico, with a contribution of 14.9 percent with $6.3 billion of the $42.1 billion value of production in Mexico in the first four months of the year.
