Mining output in Mexico increased 6.70 percent in June compared to May, reported the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI) on Monday. However, June output was down 5.3 percent compared to June of 2008.
While precious metals and metallurgical coke output both dropped in June compared to a year ago, an 18 percent increase in iron ore production partially offset these decreases.
Mexico's coke production in June reached 102,897 mt, decreasing 21.4 percent compared to June of 2008; coal production totaled 827,156 mt, down only slight 0.5 percent from last year; while iron ore production amounted to 632,546 mt in June, increasing 18.2 percent.
INEGI also reported Monday that the Mexico's construction activity declined in June by six percent compared to the same month last year, yet increased 0.05 percent compared to May. These results are based on a national survey of construction companies.
INEGI's report also reflected a shift since last year in Mexico's construction investments, from the private to the public sector. Construction projects funded by the public sector increased from 40.1 percent to 50.7 percent of Mexico's total construction investments in June 2009 compared to June 2008, while the proportion of construction spending represented by the private sector decreased from 59.9 percent in June 2008 to 49.3 percent of the total in June 2009.
