Italy's steel exports to non-EU countries up 17.5 percent in Jan-Apr

In the January-April period this year, Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries totaled 4.631 million metric tons, up 14.9 percent, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations amounted to 1.408 million metric tons, up 17.5 percent, both year on year, as announced by the Italian steel producers association Federacciai.

In particular, in the given period imports of long products from non-EU countries decreased by 32.3 percent year on year. Wire rod imports were down 29.4 percent year on year to 89,000 mt. Flat steel imports in the same period rose by 16.7 percent year on year. Among the most imported flat steel products from non-EU countries in the given period were coils (1.67 million mt, up 43.0 percent), cold rolled plate (311,000 mt, down 4.6 percent) and hot dip galvanized plate (264,000 mt,  up 11.9 percent).

Concerning Italian exports to non-EU countries in the first four months of 2019, long product exports increased by 5.3 percent, while flat product exports increased by 16.8 percent to 118,000 mt, all year on year. In particular, rebar exports increased by 17 percent to 186,000 mt, wire rod exports were stable at 107,000 mt, while steel coil exports were up 210.5 percent to 9,000 mt, all year on year.

Lastly, in the January-April period this year, Italian seamless pipe exports to non-EU countries totaled 130,000 mt, while welded pipe exports came to 165,000 mt, increasing respectively by 14 percent and 61.8 percent compared to the same period of 2018.
