The Ukrainian mining and steel producing group Metinvest has announced that the first phase of the state-of-the-art sinter plant gas cleaning system has been launched at its subsidiary Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol. The complete environmental modernization project for the sinter plant will allow the reduction of dust emissions into the air by 90 percent and the reduction of sulphur oxide emissions by 43 percent. The total investment in the project will be $220 million.
Metinvest stated that in the first phase of the modernization project, together with the primary gas cleaning on sintering machines Nos. 7, 8 and 9, a bag hose filter has also been commissioned.
The revamp of the sinter plant at Ilyich Steel was started in 2015. Eight out of twelve sintering machines at the plant have gone through major overhauls over the last three years to install new cyclones in the sintering zone. All 12 sintering machines at the plant will be connected to the new gas cleaning system before the end of 2020.
