On April 2, India's Union Minister for Steel Shri Virbhadra Singh said that state-owned NMDC, the country's largest single iron ore producer and exporter with an annual production capacity of 30 million mt operating mines in the states of Chattisgarh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, achieved a production 28.52 million mt of iron ore in 2009 and recorded a turnover of INR 75.64 billion ($1.7 billion) and a profit after tax of INR 43.72 billion ($980 million).
NMDC has ambitious plans to achieve a production capacity of 50 million mt of iron ore by the year 2015. NMDC has set up a wind mill of 10.5 MW capacity in Karntaka and is also aggressively pursuing entry into the solar energy sector.
Besides mining, NMDC is also venturing into steel sector. As SteelOrbis previously reported, the company plans to build a two million mt steel plant in Karnataka state.
