South Korean steelmaker POSCO has completed the modernization works at its blast furnace No. 4 at its Pohang plant and has recommissioned it, according to local media reports.

During the modernization, in which the company invested about KRW 530 billion ($381.74 million), old equipment was replaced and a smart furnace system was deployed, increasing its productivity and reducing its costs. Also, POSCO increased the thickness of the blast furnace shell to enhance durability and stability, and updated the cooling system to support equipment efficiency.

Initially built in 1981 as a 3,975 cubic meter blast furnace, it has undergone several renovations over the years, upgrading its volume to 5,600 cubic meters.
