Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that it has ordered a 100 MW green hydrogen plant for low-carbon steel production from Austria-based plant and equipment supplier Andritz.
The plant, which will be built at the company’s subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl, will annually produce around 9,000 mt of green hydrogen, starting from 2026.
This contract completes the orders for all plants and systems for the first stage of Salzgitter’s SALCOS® sustainable transformation program. In the course of the SALCOS® transformation program, Salzgitter will gradually convert its steel production to hydrogen-based processes with the aim to achieve virtually carbon-free production from 2033.
