Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that its subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl and Spain-based automotive component producer Gestamp Automoción have signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply of carbon-reduced steel produced under the SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking program.

In the future, Salzgitter will deliver steel to Gestamp’s European plants and receive scrap from these sites for the production of low-carbon steel, in line with the parties’ aim to establish circularity routes.

In the course of the SALCOS® transformation program, Salzgitter will gradually convert its steel production to hydrogen-based processes by 2026 with the aim to achieve carbon-free production from 2033.
