Scrap metal import value to Mexico down 41 percent in September

The value of scrap metal imported to Mexico decreased 41.3 percent, year-over-year, in September to $66.6 million. It is the second consecutive annual decline, according to a SteelOrbis analysis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi.

In contrast, the value of scrap exports from the Mexican market increased 11.0 percent, year-over-year, in September to $44 million. Considering exports only in September, 2024 is the highest value in the last 10 years, surpassed by 2014 with $51.4 million.

International trade in scrap metal in the Mexican market in the January-September period, imports decreased 22.5 percent to $740 million, which is the lowest figure in the last four years. Exports accumulated $398 million, 12.0 percent more than in the 2023 period.
