German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp has said that it is planning to sell its heavy plate mill in Duisburg-Hüttenheim, as a part of its Steel Strategy 2030. The company said that, if it fails to find a buyer for the mill by the end of June 2020, the plant faces a threat of closure, affecting 800 employees in total.
Following this announcement, 300 employees at the plant stopped working in protest at the decision. The company’s human resources director Oliver Burkhard said that, in both cases, the employees will be offered a job at other steel plants.
Recently, ThyssenKrupp posted a net loss of €364 million for the quarter ended on December 31, 2019.
