According to a report released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD) based on the data from the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), in the first quarter of the current year, steel scrap usage for crude steel production decreased compared to the first quarter of the previous year in key countries and regions including EU-28 (-8.8%), China (-7.1%), the US (-4.1%), Japan (-6.2%), South Korea (-8.3%) and Russia (-19.4%). In all the given countries, the decline in steel scrap usage was higher than the decrease in crude steel output, according to BIR.
In the first quarter this year, Turkey’s steel scrap usage amounted to 6.1 million mt, down nine percent, while crude steel output increased by 1.9 percent, both year on year. In 2015, Turkey’s steel scrap usage decreased by 14.6 percent year on year to 24.06 million mt.
In the first quarter of the current year, Turkey was the largest scrap importer of the world, increasing its scrap imports by 0.2 percent year on year to 4.15 million mt.
