US iron and steel scrap exports surge in May

According to the latest figures from the US International Trade Commission, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled 1,316,793 mt in May, which represents a 35.8 percent increase month-on-month and a 6.3 percent increase year-on-year.

Turkey was the largest recipient of US iron and scrap exports in May, with 519,498 mt, which is up 98.7 percent month-on-month and up 56.7 percent year-on-year. Other notable destinations in May include: Taiwan, with 156,789 mt; Mexico, with 151,795 mt; India, with 114,354 mt; and Canada, with 102,655 mt.

In terms of value, US iron and steel scrap exports totaled $387.6 million in May, a 43.7 percent increase compared to April but a 7.3 percent decrease compared to May 2015.
