According to the US Census Bureau, there are approximately 19 major US ports that received more than 250,000 mt of steel imports in 2017. The US imported a little over 36 million mt of steel in 2017. Steel imports from all countries, excluding Canada and Mexico, were 27.4 million mt in 2017.
Regarding the Port of New Orleans, Brandy Christian, President and CEO of Port New Orleans (Port NOLA), stated, “Imposing tariffs arbitrarily against steel and aluminum will hurt ports, the larger maritime community and steel-consuming industries.” He added, “The reaction of other countries and their possible retaliation again US exports is also a concern for Port NOLA and ports along the Lower Mississippi River as Louisiana is a leader in exporting the nation’s agricultural products overseas.” Other port authorities with consequential steel imports have also voiced the same concerns.
The list of US ports that received over 250,000 mt in steel imports is in the table below. It covers approximately 90 percent of the total imports.
