Apparent consumption of steel wire in Mexico decreased 8.6 percent, year-over-year, in April to 149,000 metric tons (mt). It is the second consecutive annual drop and the tenth contraction in the last 12 months, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
The consumption reported in April is the fifth lowest in at least the last 28 months. The highest consumption was recorded in May 2022 with 219,000 mt and the minimum was in December 2023 with 94,000 mt. It was the first time, in the analysis period, that consumption was less than 100,000 mt per month.
In April, wire production in Mexico decreased 9.1 percent, year-over-year, to 159,000 mt. It was the fifth consecutive annual decline and the tenth drop in the last 12 months.
In the first four months, wire consumption in Mexico decreased 6.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling 607,000 mt. Production decreased 7.5 percent to 646,000 mt. Exports decreased 13.3 percent to 79,000 mt.
According to industry data, the main wire producers in Mexico are ArcelorMittal, DeAcero, Grupo Acerero, Grupo Simec, Ternium and Tyasa.
