In line with the initial expectations reported by SteelOrbis in its previous report, domestic scrap prices in Germany have increased in September. With Turkey’s return to the international scrap market, demand has supported the already recovering domestic scrap segment in the EU. With scrap suppliers receiving demand both from European buyers and Turkey, competition is observed between the two sides, causing the EU domestic scrap market to move up.
For the coming month, there are some concerns voiced by sub-collectors. Sources in Turkey indicate that Turkish mills are trying to exert pressure on import scrap quotations. “If Turkey manages to reduce its scrap procurement prices from the EU, this will impact the local market. Although European producers increased their prices in September, this rise was not supported by finished steel demand,” a German source reported. Currently, collection prices for HMS I/II 70:30 in Amsterdam and Belgium are at around €300-305/mt DAP, while HMS I/II 80:20 scrap quotations are at a minimum of €310/mt DAP Belgium.
According to the latest data provided by the BDSV, in the first 20 days of September, scrap prices in Germany moved up by €8.9-22.2/mt month on month. Additionally, the year-on-year decrease is now in the range of €11.9-26.7/mt for some grades, but for others there has been an increase of €0.6-2.1/mt. Prices are average prices for domestic transactions across Germany in the first 20 days of the given month. The prices are provided by Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Stahlrecycling-und Entsorgungsunternehmen e.V. (BDSV).
