Local German scrap market moves up slightly in April

Domestic scrap prices in Germany have moved up over the past month. Demand from European producers has supported the slight price increase in April. The low level of scrap availability has been another factor. The absence of Turkey on the export side has limited the price increase for lower grades.

European collection prices are currently at around €310-320/mt DAP. A fluctuation was seen in April, with collection prices falling to €305/mt but they recovered quickly after Turkey’s return to the market. Market sources in Germany say that demand received from European mills has improved over the past week. One German sub-collector commented, “Prices have not moved up much from the German Steel Recycling Association levels, but the tonnages sought by European producers are increasing.” European mills usually work with bonus grade scrap, which one seller says is priced at around €343/mt ex-yard (approx. €355/mt delivered). Meanwhile, an Amsterdam-based export yard is currently paying €310/mt DAP for collection, while three other export yards located in Belgium and Amsterdam are paying higher levels in the range of €315-320/mt DAP. Scrap availability in the EU has not recovered much, while players point out that there are several holidays in the EU during May. “This may cause a slowdown in both scrap collection and demand. The recent demand from European mills may be pre-holiday stocking,” one source said.

According to the latest data provided by the German Steel Recycling Association, in the first 20 days of April, scrap prices moved up by €0.2-8.4/mt month on month. Additionally, the year-on-year change has showed a fall in the range of €15.2-42.7/mt. Prices are average prices for domestic transactions across Germany in the first 20 days of the given month. The prices are provided by Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Stahlrecycling-und Entsorgungsunternehmen e.V. (German Steel Recycling Association).
