German steel producer ArcelorMittal Bremen, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-headquartered global steel giant ArcelorMittal, has announced that it has received the partial permit for the construction of electric arc furnace as part of large-scale environmental modernization from the Bremen Senate for Environment, Climate and Science.
The company plans to convert its existing plant with blast furnaces into an integrated electric steelwork in the coming years. “The transition to climate-neutral steel production is a huge project consisting of many small steps. With the permit for the construction and operation of the first of two planned electric arc furnaces at the Bremen plant, an important step has been taken to prepare for the transformation,” Thomas Bünger, CEO of ArcelorMittal Flachstahl Germany, said.
Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal Bremen is cooperating with German wind energy project developer wpd to build a wind farm with a total output of 72 MW at its plants in the coming years, as SteelOrbis previously reported. The renewable energy from the wind turbines will be used in ArcelorMittal Bremen’s steel production.
