After a 56-day illegal blockade of part of the facilities of the Mexican unit of the largest private steel company in the world, ArcelorMittal, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ArcelorMittal Mexico, Víctor Cairo, announced that the blast furnace that remained inactive during the blockade will restart production in two months.
Previously, the company reported that the 56 days of blockade by the Mining Union led by Congressman Napoleón Gómez Urrutia caused the loss of production of 800,000 metric tons (mt) of steel.
The blockade of a blast furnace and a mining complex in the western city of Lázaro Cárdenas began on May 24 and ended on July 19.
Considering two months from the end of the blockade and the company's numbers regarding the loss of production, in a brief calculation by SteelOrbis, in this additional period ArcelorMittal will lose another 900,000 mt of production and in the entire period the impact will be 1.7 million mt.
ArcelorMittal is the largest steel company in Mexico, last year it manufactured 3.9 million mt of crude steel and 4.5 million mt of iron ore.
