The blockade of mining union workers at the ArcelorMittal facilities in Lázaro Cárdenas remains illegal, a district court confirmed in labor matters. Although experts in the field told SteelOrbis that the union headed by the current Senator of the Republic and next Federal Representative, Napoléon Gómez Urrutia, will escalate the conflict to a collegiate court.
“The definitive suspension is denied, with respect to the authority and specified act,” was the resolution of the Fifth District Labor Court in Mexico City on June 18, which was made public until today, Wednesday the 19th.
On May 24, the Mining Union (National Union of Mining, Metallurgical, Steelworkers and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic) began a blockade at the entrances to an ArcelorMittal mine and blast furnace.
According to the legal expert, the union has a period of up to 15 days to present the appeal for review in the collegiate court. This legal instance will have a period of 1 to 30 days to resolve.
SteelOrbis has tried to communicate with the union, through its social networks, but there is no response.
As of today, June 19, it has been 27 days since the blockade. According to a brief calculation by SteelOrbis, in that period ArcelorMittal lost around 178,000 metric tons of steel and a similar volume of rebar production at its facility in Celaya, Guanajuato (282 miles southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas) that consumes the steel of the paralyzed blast furnace.
