New judicial setback to blockage of ArcelorMittal Mexico facilities

Wednesday, 03 July 2024 10:20:53 (GMT+3)   |   San Diego

In the labor dispute between section 271 of the Mining Union and ArcelorMittal México, which for 40 days (since May 24) has blocked a blast furnace and a mine, a federal judge denied the definitive suspension to the union led by Congressman Napoleón Gómez Urrutía. It is the third setback against the workers who maintain an illegal blockade, at least the ruling of three courts.

With the resolution of two courts that the blockade is illegal, the company began the legal process to cancel the collective bargaining contract with section 271 of the union for violating the Federal Labor Law of Mexico

The complaining party is the National Union of Mining, Metallurgical, Steelworkers and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic led by the current Senator of the Republic, Napoleón Gómez Urrutia.

Despite the third ruling against it by different federal courts on labor matters, the block that has been classified as illegal will remain in the legal dispute, at least until August 7 for a constitutional hearing that will review the entire dispute.

If an agreement is not reached, as of August 7 there will be a 76-day blockade of part of the production facilities. Until that date, 500,000 metric tons (mt) of billet and about 125,000 mt of rebar will have been lost.

The blocked blast furnace, in the western city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, supplies billet to another company plant (Celaya, Guanajuato) for the production of rebar. Since last week, SteelOrbis has requested information from the company about the supply of billet for the production of rebar, but so far, there has been no response.
