ArcelorMittal South Africa (ArcelorMittal SA), a subsidiary of the world's largest steel producer ArcelorMittal, has said that it will raise most workers' wages by 9.6 percent this year after the unions opposed its proposal for a wage freeze.
ArcelorMittal SA spokesperson Sven Lunsche has confirmed that the company will honor its two-year wage agreement signed with labor union members last year, despite its earlier plans to freeze wages this year.
The wage increase in question will be valid for 74 percent of the company's 9,025 workers, represented by the council of the three main labour unions: the United Association of SA, Solidarity and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA.
"The wage will remain unchanged for the rest," Mr. Lunsche said.
