The automotive production (cars, trucks and buses) in Brazil has reached 166,700 units in May, 24.9 percent less than in April and 26.8 percent less than in May 2023, according to the sector association ANFAVEA.
ANFAVEA president Marcos de Lima Leite said that the upward trend of the production was interrupted in May by problems originated from the intensive rains that have flooded the state of Rio Grande do Sul, not only due to the stoppage of the local automotive production, but also to the shortage of parts produced in the state, leading to the stoppage or lower automotive production in other regions of the country.
Domestic sales have reached 194,300 units in May, 12.0 percent less than in April and 10.0 percent more than in May 2023.
Exports in May have reached 26,800 units, 2.1 percent less than in April and 41.4 percent less than in May 2023.
During the first five months of 2024, on yearly basis the production declined by 1.7 percent to 926,800 units, domestic sales increased by 14.9 percent to 929,700 units and exports declined by 29.7 percent to 136,300 units.
The number of jobs directly linked to the automotive production in May has reached 103,299, 1,300 more than in April, and 3,100 more than in May 2023, reaching the highest number since November 2022, an increase ascribed by Lima Leite to the impact of the investments announced by the sector since last year.
He added that each new direct job in the sector usually generates ten indirect jobs in the automotive production chain.
