The automotive production (cars, trucks and buses) in Brazil has reached 211,000 units in June, 26.6 percent more than in May and 11.6 percent more than in June 2023, according to the sector association ANFAVEA.
ANFAVEA president Marcos de Lima Leite said that the association is reviewing its forecasts for 2024, due to a sharp decline of exports and a significant increase of imports.
He mentioned that the increase of the production, previously forecasted at 6.1 percent, is now expected to increase by 4.1 percent from 2023, while exports, previously expected to increase by 0.7 percent, are now expected to decline by 20.8 percent.
Lima Leite complained that Brazil, among other automotive producing countries, has the lower import tax for Chinese electric vehicles, raising imports “above a healthy balance level”.
He suggested the implementation of a 35 percent import tax on such vehicles, the same level currently adopted by Brazil for the import of other vehicles.
Domestic sales have reached 214,300 units in June, 10.3 percent more than in May and 13.1 percent more than in June 2023.
Exports in June have reached 29,000 units, 8.2 percent more than in May and 13.1 percent more than in June 2023.
During the first six months of 2024, on yearly basis the production increased by 0.5 percent to 1.137 million units, domestic sales increased by 14.6 percent to 1.144 million units and exports declined by 28.3 percent to 165,300 units.
