The Chinese government has cautioned India against “unfairly” targeting steel imports from China, warning that it might be forced to apply to the World Trade Organization (WTO) if import protection in form of antidumping duties are levied, a senior Indian government official said on Thursday, May 12.
The Indian official said that the Chinese government has pointed out that higher imports from China per se do not constitute dumping as per WTO regulations and that injury to domestic industry from such imports has to be established to warrant imposition of antidumping duty, in conformity with internationally acceptable trade rules.
According to the Indian government official, China has claimed that inefficiencies and high costs of production are adversely impacting Indian steel mills rather than rising imports from China.
