As Colombia is yet to develop a steel industry that could meet the nation’s needs for the product, local steel association Camacero said the country still depends on imports of rebar from neighboring countries like Brazil to supply its civil construction segment.
In an interview with local media, the president of Camacero, Oscar Ramirez, said the country’s government is currently “analyzing” AD duties on imported rebar.
“[The government is now analyzing how and for how long it will apply duties on [imports] of rebar,” the executive said, adding that the local steel industry is waiting for a “more clear” signalization from the government on the rules that could potentially boost the domestic steel industry.
“We can’t run a project without knowing if the duties will be of 10, zero or 20 percent. Otherwise, there will be circumvent practices,” he said.
The executive said the local industry also sees with certain expectation the announcement of AD duties on Chinese rebar. “That’s the definition that the government needs to take with a serious and industrial policy.”
