Stephane Sejourne, executive vice-president for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy of the European Commission, has stated that the commission plans to extend measures to limit steel imports to protect the EU steel industry in its decarbonization journey, according to a report by Reuters.
Sejourne noted that Donald Trump will implement trade barriers against the EU. The commission aims to prevent overcapacity from China pouring into the region as the EU’s safeguard measures will expire on June 30, 2026. As safeguards can only be in place for a maximum of eight years according to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, the commission is looking for similar measures that would have the same impact and are WTO compatible, the EC official stated.
