HDG consumption in Mexico up 2.7 percent in May

Apparent consumption of galvanized sheet (HDG) in Mexico increased 2.7 percent, year-over-year in May, to 386,000 metric tons (mt). It is the second month in positive territory, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

After five months, galvanized sheet was the second most consumed finished steel product in the Mexican economy. From April to November 2023, it was also the second most consumed product.

In the last 12 months, through May, consumption increased 11 times and decreased last March, 3.5 percent, year-over-year.

In May, production increased 5.5 percent, year-over-year, to 287,000 mt. With the increase, the downward trend of the last two months is broken.

In the January-May period, consumption increased 4.1 percent to 1.87 million mt and production increased 0.9 percent to 1.38 million mt.

In the international market, HDG imports to Mexico from January to May increased 12.8 percent to 701,000 mt and exports increased 9.5 percent to 208,000 mt.

Industry data shows that the producers of galvanized sheet in Mexico are Ternium, Tyasa, Posco México, Villacero, Nucor-JFE Steel México and Galvasid (LM Group).
