Mexican railroad company Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) reported that its steel transportation sales totaled MXN 847 million ($45.1 million) in the third quarter of the year, 17.2 percent more compared to the same period in 2022. It was the second largest increase of the nine segments that the company divides its income.

GMXT, made up of the Ferromex, Ferrosur and TexasPacific railroads, reported that it mobilized 21,990 full railroad cars to transport steel, 1.1 percent less than those used in Q3 2022. This meant that it used 239 cars on a daily average, three units less than the 242 rail cars used in the third quarter of last year.

GMXT's income per car increased 18.4 percent, going from $1,730 to $2,049. This percentage increase was the most dynamic, above the 13.7 percent increase in the average income per van to transport vehicles.

According to data from the government's Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, a loaded railway car transports 64.3 metric tons (mt); in the third quarter GMXT moved an average of 15,369 mt per day in national or international trade cargo. In the quarter, it moved more than 1.40 million mt.

According to GMXT, among its main clients in the steel sector are Ternium, DeAcero, Talleres y Aceros (Tyasa) and Simec, among others.
