Mexican steelmakers may halt steel production due to the lack of materials, including iron ore and scrap, following a week of blockades at local railways, local steel association Canacero said.

Union-affiliated teachers are blocking railways used to transport those materials to the local steelmakers, a media report from El Norte said, with the aim of getting better pay. Canacero told El Norte the longer the blockades continue, the more likely steelmakers may halt mills.

Canacero estimated about 100,000 mt of raw materials are currently “blocked” due to the protests, along with finished steel products cannot reach their final destinations.
