New EU import quotas unlikely to be exhausted quickly again

The EU steel import quotas do not seem likely to be exhausted quickly again in the new quota period which started on April 1 and will end on June 30, due to the lower demand in the region. In the previous quota period, which started on January 1 and ended on March 31, the EU’s import quotas were not even half exhausted.

In the new quota period, the EU quotas for rebar and wire rod for Turkey are not expected to be exhausted as quickly as before. Turkey exhausted its rebar quota in the first day of the new quota period which started on October 1 and ended on December 31 last year, as SteelOrbis previously reported. In the new period, 303 mt of Turkish rebar and 4,457 mt of wire rod are waiting for customs clearance, while the rebar and wire rod quotas allocated for the country are 89,869 mt and 112,068 mt, respectively. 16.53 percent of Turkey’s merchant bar quota and 48.68 percent of the 93,660 mt hollow section quota allocated to the country are waiting at EU ports. In addition, 29,165 mt of Turkish natural gas pipes are waiting at EU ports, while the total quota tonnage for the country for this product stands at 47,060 mt.

Looking at the EU steel quotas allocated to China, 104.08 percent of the country’s merchant bar quota volume, 172.45 percent of the electrical sheet B quota and 120.25 percent of the seamless pipe quota volume are waiting at EU ports. It is expected that some of the product quotas allocated to China will be exhausted when the tonnages waiting at the ports are given customs clearance.

Meanwhile, the tonnages of metallic coated sheet A and stainless bars and light section imported from India, which are currently waiting at the customs, are above the quota volumes of 51,062 mt and 30,210 mt allocated for the country, respectively.
