The apparent consumption of liquid steel in Mexico totaled 2.77 million metric tons (mt) in March, 7.5 percent more than the same month last year. It is the highest volume in at least the last three years, for a period of five months ending in March, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
Steel consumption in finished products rose 7.5 percent, year-over-year, in March to 2.44 million mt.
Finished steel manufacturing in Mexico declined 0.3 percent, year-over-year, in March to 1.74 million metric tons (mt), the first annual decline after four straight increases.
Liquid steel production totaled 1.46 million mt, down 6.1 percent or 95,000 mt from the third month of last year.
The manufacture of finished steel products exceeded the national production of liquid steel by 18.9 percent. In volume, this difference represented the imports.
