Mexican steelmakers' producer prices decreased 13.7 percent, year-over-year, in September, the 12th consecutive annual decline, according to an analysis by SteelOrbis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) showed that the indicator excluding oil and including services increased 1.1 percent, year-over-year, in September. Prices including oil and services grew 0.7 percent. Annual general inflation (Consumer Price Index) was 4.45 percent in the same month.
The prices of the steel industry correspond to what Inegi calls "steel complexes." The price decline began in October 2022. In September, the most pronounced price contraction in the three products that comprise it was in two products: "steel sheet" (without breakdown of the type of sheet) and rebar, with a decrease 16.1 percent annually. They are the thirteenth and twelfth consecutive annual reductions, respectively.
The price of steel slab (also from the steel complex category) decreased 2.5 percent, year-over-year in September. It is the third consecutive annual decline. Except for May and June, prices have decreased since October 2022.
Beyond the concept of steel complexes, other annual price reductions were in galvanized sheet with 22.9 percent, wire rod 18.6 percent, steel bars 12.1 percent, iron and steel profiles 6.1 percent, sheet cutting and bending 6.3 percent.
The price of high voltage electricity increased 8.5 percent, the toll for freight trucks increased 7.5 percent, rail freight transportation rates increased 7.0 percent and land or truck freight transportation rates increased 5.2 percent. percent in September, compared to the same month last year.
