Ternium, one of the leading steel producers in Latin America, will invest US$225 million over the next three years to strengthen safety at its plants in Mexico, especially its Plant Guerrero, located in the municipality of San Nicolas de los Garza , Nuevo Leon.
After the explosion at the plant on July 22, in which 11 workers died and three more were wounded, Paolo Rocca, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, said that although they are complying with safety and environmental standards, they seek to reach the levels of companies in the United States and Europe.
On a visit to Monterrey, Mexico, where he met with journalists, Rocca explained that of the US$225 million, US$70 million will be allocated specifically to increase security and provide more training to workers at Plant Guerrero.
This is in addition to what the group is already investing annually in labor and environmental safety, between US$100 and US$150 million in its two plants in Monterrey and Puebla, both in Mexico.
Rocca said that after the accident, Ternium hired two international companies, Baker and Dupont, and they did a survey and analysis of the level of safety of the plant;Ternium decided to allocate this amount to improve workplace safety standards.
He noted that the accident did not affect plans to open the new plant they have in the town of Pesquería, Nuevo León, which invested US$1.1 billion, and noted that the tentative plan is to inaugurate it on September 17.
