Ternium Mexico orders safety equipment to reduce operator accidents

Ternium Mexico ordered safety equipment for both its San Nicolas de los Garza and Puebla mills, an Italian manufacturer supplying the products said. The company will use a sand filling tap hole and two slag door cleaning systems from Italian manufacturer MORE.

The manufacturer said the order is part of Ternium Mexico’s approach to remove human operators near the steelmaker’s electric arc furnace (EAF) to avoid accidents. MORE’s products should extend Ternium Mexico’s automated melting process to all its processes, from the charging phase to tapping. One of the products, named Motank, consists of a remote-controlled truck equipped with a horizontal arm, which eliminates the need for a human driven forklift.

The AUTOSAND system has been developed to increase operator safety, avoiding manual operation from the top of the sump panel of the EBT tap hole, after tapping. A high-resolution camera has been installed on the equipment to inspect the EBT tap hole directly from the control desk in order to manage the sand charging operation remotely.
