Turkey’s General Directorate of Imports of the Ministry of Commerce will launch a safeguard measure investigation on alloyed and non-alloyed wire rod imports, according to a statement published in the country’s Official Gazette.
The investigation will examine whether the increase in imports of the given products poses serious injury or the threat of injury to the domestic industry.
Recently, Turkey’s wire rod imports from countries like Egypt and Malaysia, which are not subject to import duty, have increased. In addition, imports from Russia, which is subject to import duty, have also increased as ex-Russia wire rod is cheap due to the impact of sanctions. In particular, wire rod imports from Egypt increased by 366.3 percent in July to 25,709 mt and by 54.7 percent in August to 39,795 mt, while wire rod imports from Malaysia increased by 82.2 percent in August to 17,825 mt.
In the January-August period this year, Turkey’s wire rod imports totaled 529,859 mt, including 122,257 mt from Egypt, 113,176 mt from Malaysia and 108,596 mt from Russia.
