World pig iron output down 2.6 percent in Jan-Apr

In April this year, world pig iron production amounted to 95.7 million mt, decreasing by 3.4 percent compared to March and rising by 0.2 percent compared to the same month of 2015, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, as announced by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
 
Meanwhile, in the January-April period of this year, world pig iron production totaled 375.62 million mt, down 2.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
 
In April, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 74.69 million mt, down 1.5 percent, with 58.4 million mt produced by China, down two percent, 6.52 million mt produced by Japan, up 1.8 percent, and 5.03 million mt produced by India, growing by 5.5 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same month, EU countries produced 7.37 million mt of pig iron, down 6.8 percent, while the CIS produced 6.86 million mt, up 10.7 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
