The Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal has said that in 2011 it plans to commission its new pulverized coal injection (PCI) plant, the total investment in which is estimated at more than UAH 980 million (about $123 million).

Accordingly, the construction of the new PCI plant, which is currently the steelmaker's main project, will allow Zaporizhstal to reduce the rate of consumption of power and fuel in the production of pig iron by more than 50 kg of fuel unit, or 194,000 metric tons of fuel unit per year, with annual production of pig iron amounting to 3.88 million mt. The estimated annual reduction in natural gas consumption will exceed 300 million cubic meters.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, the construction of the new PCI plant at Zaporizhstal was started in February 2008, with its commissioning date being postponed several times due to difficulties in the startup of the facility.
