Chile’s Siderurgica Huachipato, the Chilean agency CORFO, the German government and Germany’s SMS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to produce green steel in Chile.
The document was signed during the visit of Chile’s president, Gabriel Boric, to Germany.
Under the terms of the MoU, Huachipato will offer resources and infrastructure to develop the production of green steel in Chile, while collaborating with the other parts currently involved in technologies linked to decarbonization of the steel production.
For its side, SMS will offer technological knowledge, giving access to part of its intellectual propriety for the development of sustainable steel production.
Huachipato has recently suspended the steel production due to alleged unfair competition from imports of steel products from China.
The decision was subsequently cancelled, following the decision of the government to increase the import tax for these products.
Jean Paul Sauré, general manager of Huachipato, has commented that the plant is strategic for Chile and will remain searching for increased sustainability, not only in its own processes, but also in the mining activity in Chile.
Huachipato is controlled by the CAP group.
