According to the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai, in January this year Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries amounted to 450,000 metric tons, decreasing by 47.5 percent year on year, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations totaled 400,000 metric tons, up 19.8 percent year on year.
In January, Italy's semi-finished steel product imports from non-EU countries totaled 206,000 metric tons, down 29.7 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the country's semi-finished steel product exports to countries outside the EU in the given month amounted to 11,000 metric tons, decreasing by 38.9 percent year on year.
In the month in question, Italy's imports of long steel products from non-EU countries went down by 26.3 percent to 42,000 metric tons, while its long steel product exports to non-EU destinations totaled 120,000 metric tons, up 66.7 percent, both year on year.
On the other hand, in January Italy's flat steel product imports from non-EU sources came to 171,000 metric tons, down 63.8 percent as compared to January 2011, while its flat steel product exports amounted to 153,000 metric tons, with a 15 percent increase year on year.
