Japanese steelmaker Aichi Steel Corporation has announced that, together with Toho Gas Group and Aichi Ceratec Co., Ltd., it has begun the testing of hydrogen combustion technology in a steel heat treatment furnace at its Kariya plant, in line with its carbon neutralization strategy.

Within the scope of the test, the company aims to develop heat treatment technology using hydrogen, to verify hydrogen combustion, and to gather information in order to use hydrogen at its other plants.

Also, Aichi Steel pointed out that in March 2022 it had used renewable energy and carbon-neutral city gas, which was produced from liquified natural gas, at Kariya, reducing the plant’s annual emissions by about 12,000 mt and achieving carbon neutrality at the plant
