According to the data released by the Russian Federation's Federal Customs Service, in January 2009 Russia exported 1.98 million metric tons of ferrous metals (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) - down 16.1 percent, 178,700 metric tons of pig iron - down 28.4 percent, 61,400 metric tons of ferroalloys - up 18.5 percent, 1.07 million metric tons of semi-finished steel products - down 19.5 percent, 590,400 metric tons of flat rolled products - down 17.8 percent, 741,400 metric tons of iron ore and concentrate - down 53.4 percent, and 123,900 metric tons of coke and semi-coke - down 41 percent, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
During the period in question, Russia decreased its ferrous metal imports (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) by 67.1 percent and its steel pipe imports by 63.6 percent year on year, to 105,600 metric tons and 29,200 metric tons respectively.
