According to the data released by the Russian Federation's Federal Customs Service, in January-February 2009 Russia exported 3.884 million metric tons of ferrous metals (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) - down 19.1 percent, 480,800 metric tons of pig iron - down 33.2 percent, 121,100 metric tons of ferroalloys - up four percent, 1.970 million metric tons of semi-finished steel products - down 26.7 percent, 1.285 million metric tons of flat rolled products - down five percent, 1.704 million metric tons of iron ore and concentrate -down 52.4 percent, and 265,000 metric tons of coke and semi-coke - down 36.2 percent, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
During the period in question, Russia decreased its ferrous metal imports (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) by 53.6 percent and its steel pipe imports by 46.6 percent year on year, to 296,900 metric tons and 99,500 metric tons respectively.
