Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that its subsidiary SMS Concast will supply a new strand with new oscillation drive technology for the existing beam blank caster of Spanish steel producer Cia Española de Laminación S.L. (CELSA) Barcelona.

According to SMS, CELSA Barcelona’s existing six-strand beam blank caster, built by SMS Concast in 2000, casts billet, bloom and beam blank sections of various sizes. It was originally designed for a nominal capacity of more than one million mt per year, provided with a prepared seventh strand and the possibility to increase production accordingly. Against the backdrop of new market requirements, the seventh strand is now going to be equipped with the new direct oscillation drive for beam blanks and the primary water cooling plant will also be upgraded.

The installation of the new equipment is planned to be completed by the end of this year. CELSA plans to install the new oscillation drive technology on all other strands after a first trial period.
