Summary of China’s steel imports & exports in July

In July, China's finished steel exports totaled 7.208 million mt, up 1.27 million mt or 21.4 percent year on year, totaling a value of $7.825 billion, up $3.526 billion or 82 percent compared with the same period last year. In addition, finished steel exports for the January-July period reached 34.121 million mt, down 5.581 million mt or 14.1 percent, amounting to a total value of $33.054 billion, up $6.374 billion or 23.9 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, China's finished steel imports in July totaled 1.439 million mt, up 47,000 mt or 3.4 percent year on year, totaling $2.225 billion in value, up $460 million or 26.1 percent compared with the same period last year. In addition, finished steel imports for the January-July period reached 9.691 million mt, down 394,000 mt or 3.9 percent, amounting to $13.587 billion, up $1.508 billion or 12.5 percent year on year.

In July, the country's net exports of finished steel amounted to 5.769 million mt, totaling a value of $5.6 billion. The average export price was $1,085.6/mt, up $361.62/mt or 49.8 percent year on year. The average import price was $1,546.21/mt, up $278.31/mt or 22 percent year on year. The export price was $460.61/mt or 29.8 percent lower than the export price, a decrease of $83.31/mt compared with $543.92/mt of the previous year, indicating that the growth of the export price is faster than that of the import price. In the January-July period, net exports reached 24.43 million mt, amounting to a value of $19.467 billion.

Long product exports in July stood at 3.732 million mt, up 281,000 mt or 8.1 percent year on year, totaling a value of $4.218 billion, up $1.738 billion or 70.1 percent compared with the same period last year. Total long product exports in the January-July period reached 17.606 million mt, down 5.162 million mt or 22.7 percent, amounting to a value of $17.738 billion, up $3.024 billion or 20.6 percent year on year.

Flat rolled exports in July stood at 3.476 million mt, up 989,000 mt or 39.8 percent year on year, totaling a value of $3.607 billion, up $1.788 billion or 98.3 percent compared with the same period last year. Total flat rolled exports in the January-July period reached 16.515 million mt, down 419,000 mt or 2.5 percent, amounting to a value of $15.316 billion, up $3.35 billion or 28 percent year on year.

The breakdown of China's steel imports & exports in July is as follows:

Large profile exports in July stood at 355,000 mt, down 144,000 mt or 28.9 percent year on year, totaling a value of $347 million, up $75 million or 27.6 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $977.46/mt. Total large profile exports in the January-July period reached 1.86 million mt, down 1.077 million mt or 36.7 percent, amounting to a value of $1.543 billion, up $69 million or 4.7 percent year on year.

Large profile imports in July came to 34,000 mt, up 13,000 mt or 61.9 percent year on year, totaling $38 million in value, up $20 million or 111.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,117.65/mt. Total January-July imports of the subject product reached 158,000 mt, down 5,000 mt or 3.1 percent, amounting to $151 million in value, up $24 million or 18.9 percent year on year.

China's medium profile export volume in July reached 126,000 mt, up 45,000 mt or 55.6 percent year on year, totaling a value of $125 million, up $78 million or 166 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $992.06/mt. Total January-July exports reached 499,000 mt, down 214,000 mt or 30 percent, amounting to $445 million, up $80 million or 21.9 percent year on year.

Medium profile imports in July amounted to 3,000 mt, down 2,000 mt or 40 percent year on year, totaling $5 million. The average import price was $1,666.67/mt. Total January-July imports reached 33,000 mt, up 4,000 mt or 13.8 percent, amounting to $47 million, up $18 million or 62.1 percent year on year.

Steel bar exports in July reached 991,000 mt, up 661,000 mt or 200 percent year on year, totaling $991 million, up $771 million or 350.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,000/mt, up $275.67/mt or 52.2 percent year on year. Total January-July exports of the product in question reached 3.976 million mt, up 1.706 million mt or 75.2 percent, amounting to $3.58 billion, up $2.238 billion or 166.8 percent year on year.

Bar imports in July came to 4,000 mt, up 4,000 mt or 11.1 percent year on year, totaling $80 million, up $22 million or 37.9 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $2,000/mt. Total January-July bar imports reached 264,000 mt, up 39,000 mt or 17.3 percent, amounting to $502 million, up $139 million or 38.3 percent year on year.

Rebar exports in July stood at 770,000 mt, down 386,000 mt or 76.1 percent year on year, totaling $113 million in value, down $137 million or 54.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $933.88/mt. Total exports in the January-July period reached 70,000 mt, down 3.841 million mt or 83.3 percent, amounting to $568 million, down $1.443 billion or 83.3 percent year on year.

Rebar imports in July stood at 1,000 mt, down 3,000 mt or 75 percent year on year, totaling $1 million, down $1 million or 50 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $973/mt. Total January-July imports reached 19,000 mt, down 15,000 mt or 44.1 percent, amounting to $10 million, down $10 million or 50 percent year on year.

China's wire rod exports in July totaled 692,000 mt, down 55,000 mt or 7.4 percent year on year, totaling $639 million in value, up $275 million or 75.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $923.41/mt. Total exports in January-July reached 3.1 million mt, down 1.493 million mt or 32.5 percent, amounting to $2.485 billion in value, up $409 million or 19.7 percent year on year.

Wire rod imports in July amounted to 42,000 mt, down 10,000 mt or 19.2 percent year on year, totaling a value of $58 million, up $15 million or 34.9 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,380.95/mt. Total imports in January-July reached 316,000 mt, down 80,000 mt or 20.2 percent, amounting to $379 million, up $35 million or 10.2 percent year on year.

China's medium plate exports in July reached 847,000 mt, up 208,000 mt or 32.6 percent year on year, totaling $912 million in value, up $453 million or 98.7 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,076.74/mt. Total January-July exports reached 4.918 million mt, up 122,000 mt or 2.5 percent, amounting to a total value of $4.516 billion, up $1.5 billion or 49.7 percent year on year.

Medium plate imports in July climbed to 101,000 mt, up 2,000 mt or 2 percent year on year, totaling $180 million, up $42 million or 30.4 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,782.18/mt. Total January-July medium plate imports came to 728,000 mt, up 52,000 mt or 7.7 percent, amounting to $1.142 billion, up $240 million or 26.6 percent year on year.

China's HR coil export volume in July stood at 1.488 million mt, up 507,000 mt or 51.7 percent year on year, totaling a value of $1.392 billion, up $758 million or 119.6 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $935.48/mt. Total January-July HR coil exports reached 6.224 million mt, up 233,000 mt or 3.9 percent, amounting to $5.122 billion, up $1.438 billion or 39 percent year on year.

HR coil imports in July came to 162,000 mt, down 36,000 mt or 18.2 percent year on year, totaling a value of $182 million, down $69 million or 27.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average HR coil import price was $1,123.46/mt. Total HR coil imports in the January-July period reached 1.156 million mt, down 354,000 mt or 23.4 percent, amounting to $1.256 billion in value, down $524 million or 29.4 percent year on year.

China's CR coil export volume in July reached 433,000 mt, up 227,000 mt or 110.2 percent year on year, totaling $491 million, up $266 million or 118.2 percent compared with the same period last year. The average CR coil export price was $1,133.95/mt. Total January-July exports for this product reached 1.759 million mt, up 471,000 mt or 36.6 percent, amounting to $2.078 billion, up $194 million or 10.3 percent year on year.

CR coil imports in July stood at 360,000 mt, up 20,000 mt or 5.9 percent year on year, totaling $398 million in value, up $85 million or 27.2 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,105.56/mt. Total January-July CR coil imports reached 2.531 million mt, down 3,000 mt or 0.1 percent, amounting to a value of $2.451 billion, up $264 million or 12.1 percent year on year.

The galvanized sheet export volume in July was 399,000 mt, up 13,000 mt or 3.4 percent year on year, totaling $433 million, up $141 million or 48.3 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,085.21/mt. Total exports in the January-July period reached 1.99 million mt, down 602,000 mt or 23.2 percent, amounting to $1.85 billion, down $46 million or 2.4 percent year on year.

Galvanized sheet imports in July were 420,000 mt, up 31,000 mt or 8 percent year on year, totaling a value of $433 million, up $113 million or 35.3 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,030.95/mt. Total imports in the January-July period reached 2.616 million mt, down 81,000 mt or 3 percent, amounting to $2.384 billion, up $202 million or 9.3 percent year on year.

The color coated sheet export volume in July reached 240,000 mt, up 135,000 mt or 128.6 percent year on year, totaling $292 million, up $194 million or 198 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,216.67/mt. Total exports in the January-July period reached 1.225 million mt, up 617,000 mt or 101.5 percent, amounting to a value of $1.303 billion, up $746 million or 133.9 percent year on year.

Color coated sheet imports in July stood at 28,000 mt, up 10,000 mt or 55.6 percent year on year, totaling $31 million, up $12 million or 63.2 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,107.14/mt. Total imports of the subject product in the January-July period reached 162,000 mt, up 26,000 mt or 19.1 percent, amounting to a value of $173 million, up $39 million or 2.9 percent year on year.

China's electrical steel exports in July came to 14,000 mt, up 4,000 mt or 40 percent year on year, totaling $16 million, up $9 million or 128.6 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,142.86/mt. Total electrical steel exports in the January-July period reached 83,000 mt, down 37,000 mt or 33.6 percent, amounting to a total value of $75 million, down $10 million or 13.2 percent year on year.

Electrical steel imports in July stood at 97,000 mt, up 12,000 mt or 14.1 percent year on year, totaling $213 million, up $78 million or 57.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $2,195.88/mt. Total imports of the subject product in the January-July period reached 625,000 mt, up 5,000 mt or 0.8 percent, amounting to $1.139 billion, up $248 million or 27.8 percent year on year.

China's seamless pipe export volume in July reached 592,000 mt, up 222,000 mt or 60 percent year on year, totaling $862 million, up $387 million or 81.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,456.08/mt. Total January-July exports reached 2.945 million mt, up 732,000 mt or 33.1 percent, amounting to $3.906 billion, up $1.255 billion or 47.3 percent year on year.

Seamless pipe imports in July came to 54,000 mt, up 12,000 mt or 28.6 percent year on year, totaling $289 million, up $99 million or 52.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $5,351.85/mt. Total January-July imports reached 331,000 mt, up 12,000 mt or 3.8 percent, amounting to $1.807 billion, up $429 million or 31.1 percent year on year.

China's welded pipe export volume in July was 400,000 mt, down 186,000 mt or 31.7 percent year on year, totaling a value of $486 million, up $31 million or 7.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,215/mt. Total exports in the January-July period reached 1.931 million mt, down 1.171 million mt or 37.7 percent, amounting to $1.941 billion, down $381 million or 16.4 percent year on year.

Welded pipe imports in July came to 17,000 mt, down 3,000 mt or 15 percent year on year, totaling $42 million, down $2 million or 4.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $2,470.59/mt. Total January-July imports for this product reached 244,000 mt, up 120,000 mt or 96.8 percent, amounting to $480 million, up $212 million or 79.1 percent year on year.

The steel wire export volume in July reached 188,000 mt, up 86,000 mt or 84.3 percent year on year, totaling $231 million, up $141 million or 156.7 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,228.72/mt. Total exports in the January-July period reached 998,000 mt, up 257,000 mt or 34.7 percent, amounting to a value of $1.074 billion, up $464 million or 76.1 percent year on year.

Steel wire imports in July stood at 15,000 mt, down 4,000 mt or 21.1 percent year on year, totaling $44 million, up $13 million or 41.9 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $2,933.33/mt. Total imports of the subject product in the January-July period reached 101,000 mt, down 32,000 mt or 24.1 percent, amounting to a value of $269 million, up $56 million or 26.3 percent year on year.
