US import rebar market struggles to gain traction

With US domestic rebar prices remaining largely stable due to unchanged scrap prices this month, rebar buyer in the US have little incentive to book large import orders at prices that are “nowhere near low enough behind domestic spots,” according to sources.

Algerian rebar offers have resumed at around $39.00-$40.00 cwt. ($860-$882/mt or $780-$800/nt) DDP loaded truck in US Gulf ports, virtually at the same level as Egyptian offers, while Mexican offers are still at $40.00-$41.00 cwt. ($882-$904/mt or $800-$820/nt) DDP Houston.

Sources note that deals on Mexican rebar below that level are “pretty much nonexistent” considering domestic Mexican rebar prices are on the rise and importers are wary of potential antidumping issues if import offers are too low compared to Mexican domestics.
