In May this year, new car registrations totaled 1,398,913 units in the European Union (EU), increasing 0.8 percent year on year, after showing robust growth in April, according to the latest figures issued by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA).
In May, among the five big markets, Spain (+7.2%) and the UK (+3.4%) posted increases, while demand for cars declined in Germany (-5.8%) and Italy (-2.8%), all year on year.
Meanwhile, in the January-May period of this year new passenger car registrations in the EU increased to 6,879,885 units, up 2.4 percent year on year. In this period, new passenger car registrations increased by 10.6 percent in Spain, by 3.5 percent in France and by 2.6 percent in Germany and were down by 6.8 percent in the UK, all on year-on-year basis.
