According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian motor vehicle production in March this year decreased 8.7 percent as compared to March 2012 and was down 2.7 percent month on month with 1,685,355 vehicles produced. In the last Indian fiscal year (started April 1, 2012), India's passenger car output rose 1.2 percent over the previous fiscal year.
In the April 2012-March 2013 period, motor vehicle sales in India increased by 2.6 percent year on year, the country's passenger car sales in the period in question declined by 6.7 percent, while other light vehicle (utility vehicles) sales rose by 52.2 percent and the commercial vehicles segment registered a fall of two percent in sales, all on year-on-year basis. However, in March India's total motor vehicle sales decreased by 7.76 percent compared to March 2012, while passenger car sales fell by 22.5 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, in the last Indian fiscal year India's total motor vehicle exports decreased by 1.3 percent year on year. Passenger car exports rose by nine percent and commercial vehicle exports registered a decrease of 13.35 percent in the 12 months in question, both on year-on-year basis. The SIAM said that in March this year passenger car exports from India rose by 3.1 percent, while commercial vehicle exports fell by 28.3 percent, both year on year.
